PERSPECTIVES IN HEALTH

Building & Supporting a More Diverse Health Care Workforce

Medical school faculty and active physicians in the US are predominantly white (64% of faculty and 56% of physicians) and male (59% of faculty and 64% of physicians). And while Black Americans comprise 13% of the US population, they make up only 4% of the active physician workforce. These numbers clearly illustrate that providers do not reflect the diversity of the communities they serve, and research has suggested that this can have a negative impact on patient outcomes. How can we build and support a more diverse health care workforce, starting with academic medical institutions? On September 17, Dr. Uché Blackstock, founder and CEO of Advancing Health Equity and an emergency medicine specialist in New York City, and Dr. Lipi Roy, a medical contributor with MSNBC and NBC News, joined #AspenIdeaHealth to discuss bias, racism, and inequity medicine. Watch and share!
