During a recent Aspen Community Programs event, David Agus, CEO of the Ellison Institute at the University of Southern California and bestselling author, explained how doctors are harnessing the power of technology to customize medical care like never before and offered his take on the best approach for COVID-19 pandemic recovery, in conversation with Jessica Herzstein, specialist in preventive and environmental health. About the speakers:


David Agus CEO of the Ellison Institute, University of Southern California

Dr. David B. Agus is a professor of medicine and engineering at the University of Southern California Keck School of Medicine and Viterbi School of Engineering and the founding CEO of USC’s Lawrence J. Ellison Institute for Transformative Medicine. He is one of the world’s leading physicians and the cofounder of several pioneering personalized medicine companies. Dr. Agus’ first book, The End of Illness, was published in 2012 and is a New York Times #1 and international best seller, and subject of a PBS special. His second book, New York Times best-selling A Short Guide to a Long Life, was published January 2014, and his newest book The Lucky Years: How to thrive in the brave new world of health, also a New York Times bestseller was published in 2016. He is presently working on his fourth book, tentatively called Deep into Nature: What We Can Learn from the Tree of Life.

Jessica Herzstein Specialist in Preventative Medicine and Environmental Health

Jessica Herzstein, M.D., M.P.H. is a specialist in preventive medicine, internal medicine, and occupational and environmental health. Her work focuses on workforce health and safety and health crisis preparedness and communications. Jessica recently served as a member of the US Preventive Services Task Force, the national panel of health experts who develop evidence-based guidelines for clinical preventive services including healthy behaviors and screening tests. She has worked as a medical program manager for the Department of Defense, the Harvard Institute of International Development, and the U.S. Agency for International Development, and she served on the faculty at two medical schools. She currently lectures at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine.



This event was part of the Aspen Community Program's Murdock Mind, Body, Spirit Series , which reflects the founding principles of the Aspen Institute—a commitment to nurturing the whole individual—by bringing a range of experts, innovators, and leaders to Aspen to discuss their research and share the latest revelations about health and wellness.
