In our June 20/20 Book Club selection, When My Time Comes, Diane Rehm, renowned radio host and best-selling author, explores diverse perspectives- from terminally ill patients and caregivers to physicians and ethicists- around medical aid in dying. Read the book and join us for a virtual book talk with Diane on June 16th to discuss what she learned about the debate and other end-of-life issues from those she interviewed.

About When My Time Comes:

When My Time Comes is a book of candor and compassion, addressing the urgent, hotly-contested cause of the Right-to-Die movement, of which author Diane Rehm is an advocate.

Through interviews with terminally ill patients, and with physicians, ethicists, spouses, relatives, and representatives of those who vigorously oppose the movement, Rehm gives voice to a broad range of people who are personally linked to the realities of medical aid in dying. The book presents the fervent arguments–both for and against–that are propelling the current debates across the nation about whether to adopt laws allowing those who are dying to put an end to their suffering. With characteristic even-handedness, Rehm skillfully shows both sides of the argument, providing the full context for this highly divisive issue.

The book has also inspired a soon-to-be released public television documentary by the same name.

About the Author:

Diane Rehm is host of the podcast, “On My Mind.” For 37 years, she hosted “The Diane Rehm Show” on WAMU/NPR, where she began as a volunteer. She then became an assistant producer and later host and producer of two health-oriented programs. Rehm is the author of four autobiographical books and, most recently, When My Time Comes: Conversations About Whether Those Who Are Dying Should Have the Right to Determine When Life Should End. A director emerita of the PEN/Faulkner Foundation, she is the recipient of numerous honors, including the National Humanities Medal, a Personal Peabody Award, and one of Washingtonian magazine’s 100 Most Powerful Women.

Book Talk:

On Tuesday, June 16th (1:00 pm EST), Diane Rehm joined Aspen Ideas: Health 20/20 for a LIVE conversation about her new book, When My Time Comes, and perspectives on the Right-to-Die movement. Watch the poignant conversation with Adrienne Brodeur, Executive Director of Aspen Words.
